Well this is going to be a big one! I should also say a very Happy New Year to all.
I'm afraid I'm not as up to date as I should be with the blog so a lot has to be said for the adventures we have already encountered...
Currently we are in Cairns. It's the wet season and boy oh boy is it just that! The positive however, is that it serves as a home from home and you don't get as homesick. But it's pretty grim when its rainy in Oz as naively you expect the sun to be shining 24/7. It doesn't put off the Brits in the hostel swimming pool though! Always out there, rain or shine, even on the sun loungers. It seems old habits die hard.
The hostel we're staying at was described by our Welsh friend as being like Magaluf in Australia. He's not far wrong. Not to everybody's taste but had to please the brother a little and also I can't moan too much, its very clean, we get a free meal and its only $17 a night. What some may call a bargain!
I am currently the only girl in the dorm which is ok but definite negatives when it comes to toilet procedures and I wasn't a fan of binning someone's left over dried sweaty socks and crusty underpants. The room hummed so it was a must do.
Gary has persuaded me to tailor my tastebuds to the local aborigine drink - Goon. And after only a few glasses last night, I have paid today. So, the lads in the room are out on the hostel pub crawl while I tend to my book. Glamorous I know!
There's something to be said about that Goon though. It tastes horrendous and after one of the Canadians in our room showed us what a splash of the stuff did to his laptop (It eroded part of the screen) I dread to think what it does to your stomach lining. So I'm having a bit of a Goon Detox.
Although this is only our second day here in Cairns we haven't seen anything yet due to the weather but I'm a bit unsure of what I think of Cairns CBD. Due to it being the wet season, everywhere is really quiet and to be honest it seems like a small town rather than a city. I think I expected it to look more like Melbourne or Sydney but there are no high rise buildings here so the scenery wasn't what I expected. Saying that, we have a fantastic view out of our room, at the moment in the distance, we can just see the fog rolling over the mountains and forest. I'm definitely looking forward to doing the rainforest tour.
I'll reserve judgement until we have seen more though.
Definitely the highlight of the trip so far was spending New Years Eve watching the fireworks in Sydney. I have never seen anything like it in my life. It even tops the laser shows and Fireworks at Disney! The atmosphere was fantastic. At 12am the crowd behind us got out their sparklers and popped open a bottle of bubbly, whilst sporting little party hats. It seemed quite surreal thinking back now as its been on my to do list forever.
Although I was a little choked wishing my family at home could have experienced it with me, it was special that I spent it with Gary because when thinking about the year ahead, we're spending half of it together travelling so have so many more amazing experiences to come.
Anyways, thats the slushy part over. I shall try and update the blog more frequently. I'll try.
