We arrived in Salta from Tucaman and headed to a hostel we had booked online called Hostal Del Centro. It was rated best in Salta with 90% so we knew we couldn`t go wrong! After checking in to our room and dropping off our bags we headed to the supermarket to get some lunch. Whilst eating lunch in the patio we met a couple, Heidi and Anna who we automatically hit it off with. They, like us were travelling around the world and were at the end of their trip, heading home in December. We decided that we were going to head up to Cerro San Bernardo after lunch and so were they so we all went together including an American girl called Corrina.Cerro San Bernardo is a view point which overlooks Salta, accessed either by a steep walk or a gondala (cable car). We were lazy and caught the gondala, which may not have been such a good idea for Lee as he was looking rather nervous on the way up! Not too sure how he will ever do a sky dive in New Zealand! From the top of the hill, the views were fantastic and the weather was nice too. After taking some cool pictures and enjoying the views we went back to the hostel to chill out, make dinner and watch a film, as we had cable tv in our room!
On Tuesday we had booked a tour to a town called Cafayate (about 5 hours away from Salta) with Heidi and Anna. The tour was more about the journey to Cafayate than the town itself. The scenery was absolutely incredible. The mountain views were spectacular as they were such a range of different colours that it looked totally surreal. Cafayate was also very nice. We visited 2 wineries and did tastings, after which we had some lunch and sat in the plaza. Whilst sitting there a Chilean man came over and started talking to us. He was selling name broaches that he made on the spot, and began to tell us his whole life story, whilst making a broach for Jess! His friend also came over ... Lee thought he looked like the penguin out of Batman! We have a picture of him, so you decide!
On Wedneday we did another tour, this time to a mountain town called Cachi. We were a little aprehensive as to whether the scenery could possibly be any better than what we had seen the previous day ... it was however even more amazing! Cachi itself was beautiful, surrounded by snow capped mountains. On the journey there, the scenery changed so much. We drove along one totally straight road with multicoloured mountains in the background and tonnes of cacti surrounding us on either side. We got out the car at one point and spent a while taking silly pictures on the road and loads of pictures of cactus!! After having lunch in Cachi, we headed back to Salta and arrived at around 7pm ready to eat the BBQ and drink the free red wine the guys at the hostel were preparing. The food was fantastic, and Jess was up until the late hours of the morning still drinking whilst Lee was in bed away with the fairys!
For the remaining few days in Salta we enjoyed walking around the city, cooking scrummy food and updating the blog! Salta was certainly a home from home for us, the hostel was great, the staff were brilliant and the laid back vibe made it perfect. We were both quite sad to leave, but after a week in Salta we felt it was time to move on.
