Grocery shop & swim
Tim and I got up early and wandered into town to bring back groceries. We walked the 285 steps down to street level and then aprox 500 up to another street that had a grocery store, bakery and vegetable stand. We started in the bakery because they also served coffee. We sat down at the tile topped tables watching the morning routine unfold. Next we visited the grocery store, a very small space filled with groceries and wine top to bottom. The store owner helped bring items down from high up shelves. He guessed that we were feeding boys from the size of our order - too funny. A delivery boy was called, and we were told to expect him at our villa in about a half hour. We walked back to our place feeling very thankful that we only had to haul ourselves back and not groceries. Mini vehicles buzzed around making deliveries of all sorts.
At home the delivery boy rang the bell at our gate and with the help of a friend he lifted everything into our kitchen. So nice!
The weather was hot, around 35 degrees. We sat inside with our air conditioning on enjoying the view from the windows. The boys really wanted to get down to the beach, at about 3:00 we ventured out. We passed the restaurant that we ate at the night before noticing how different it looked in the daytime - a totally different mood, but still pretty, decorated with fresh lemons. The beach was directly below us, 659 steps down (the kids counted).
The water was perfectly clear, the beach all pebbles with a few tall boulders. The stones were hard on our feet, so unless I was in the water I kept my shoes on. We brought our snorkels with us and the kids were excited to start exploring. Belia preferred to stay on shore and look for the nicest pebbles. We saw a few brightly colored fish but mostly pale blue ones. While Mariah and I snorkeled around it started to rain. We didn't hurry out because the water felt warm. Once it started to thunder we made our way to shore. Another family was huddled in the shelter of a boulder having a snack, and waiting out the weather. We stood close to our boulder and watched a man prepare four small octopi that he just caught. First he bit them behind the eyes (later we found out that this is how they kill the octopus). Then he opened them up releasing the innards. After swishing them in the water he started swirling them around on a large stone. He would swirl for a bit working up a lather on the rock, and them swish them in the ocean again. He did this over and over, and then left with the 4 cleaned octopi hanging from his fingers. When we asked Giovanni about this method he said that the swirling on a rock causes the tentacles to stiffen up
making them crispy, but it is a long process.
The weather wasn't improving so we went to a beachside restaurant for hot chocolate, ice cream and coffees. Mariah and Darius ordered the icecream but when they saw the hot chocolate which was prepared more like hot pudding they second guessed their choice. Luckily Belia got full and shared the last bit with both of them. Brennin and Mariah played a game called musical forks - a music trivia game they made up.
The rain subsided and we climbed back to our villa. Along the way we took breaks, Tim handed out cookies every so often and the kids counted steps.
At home we made supper and sat out on the patio. Positano was lit up, including the boats in the harbor.
It was very peaceful.
The quiet lasted for a while until we heard what sounded like dynamite blasts. The blasts echoed through the mountains and finally we saw fireworks. Feeling somewhat vulnerable from being perched precariously on a cliff - not wanting boulders to come loose, we wondered if fireworks were the smartest thing in this area. It was beautiful though!
We were very happy with the wifi in the villa. The kids did a lot of face timing and texting with friends, and we made phone calls home. It was nice to have a good connection without much of a delay.

Oma and opa Thanks for two more blogs, cliffs, steps and more cliffs! Wonder how you found this place! The Canadian prairies will be boring after places like this one. And then to think that so many people live there all the time. Tonight we had a LOT of rain after a few quite warm and humid days. No problem filling the pool!
