After our delicious and very much appreciated free breakfast, Alfredo the lovely hostel owner drives us to Salento, a small village ten minutes drive away. We pay 40 COP each and hop in a 4x4 jeep up to Valle De Cocora a valley up in the mountains located in the Central Cordillera of the Andean mountains.
We choose a 5 miles round trip to the top of the valley and back down, it was tough going with altitude but the view from the top was so vast and amazing. You could feel the temperature plummeting the higher we got, feeling like an eerie chill almost. The view was mountains as far as the eye could see, scattered with hundreds of the tallest palm trees we had ever seen. This is what I expected from Colombia, the photos have done this place no justice, there was a real magical atmosphere.
Salento is tiny, not more than a square and a couple side streets in total but is known for being a great little place for a bit of shopping for few traditional things from the locals crafty shops. We saw loads that we would love to bring home if we had the room and its all so cheap.
Thankfully making it to the hostel before dark we can just make tea and chill out on the decking for the evening.
