With a long day ahead we've decided to head to the Las Lajas Sanctuary today before we cross the border into Ecuador and I'm so glad we didn't miss it.
We catch a quick collectivo cab to the sanctuary and we got to see way more than we bargained for. Arriving at then top of the valley you walk down to the sanctuary through cobble streets offering spit roast guinea pig served with potato cakes (not yet sampled) and the chance to have photos taken with the most stunning llamas I had ever seen all amongst the street vendors and stalls.
Las Lajas Sanctuary is a bascilia church located in Ipialas and built inside the canyon of the Guaitara River. The church was built in Gothic Revival style between 1916 and 1949.
The inspiration for the church was a miraculous event in 1754 when a mother and her deaf-mute daughter were caught in a strong storm. The two sought refuge between the gigantic rocks.
The surrounding walk through the grounds reveals a large collection of thanksgiving plaques along a cliff wall that the years' pilgrims have left as thanks for revelations.
Great eye-opening day out.

Jody Another fantastic visit and it looks so interesting. The photograph is perfect it looks mysterious, magical almost, beautiful yet imposing - the last place you would envisage finding sexy llamas and cooked Guinea pig x
