Today we walked across the bridge to the famous Port caves. These are the warehouses of the famous wine makes from the Duoro valley. Lisa and I look a tour, learned that they still pick and stomp the grapes (hand and foot respectively), they use only french oak barrels , and not all port is sweet. We climbed in sunshine on ancient cobblestone streets and talked to people about their everyday lives. all the tourist things were milestones on my trip plan. The real sights are only seen in my rear view mirror when I reflect on the simple connections made. Shared moments...a small kindness, recognition in a smile.
There were also those milestones... The celestial cafe where a scene from Harry Potter was set...a beautiful library where they will open an hour early to let you come in and take pictures...and a sandwich that could satisfy a marathoner.
Porto is not elegant. It has an earthy charm....like an aging courtesan. Still beautiful...especially in the right light.
