Saturday- We got up 30 min before the taxi arrived. As mom says,'Not a whole lot of time'. We fell back to sleep. Toast for breakfast and on our way. We were on the train to Eindhoven at 8. On the train to Cologne at 9:15. In the city by about 11:30 AM. The first thing we saw upon leaving the station is the mamoth cathedral. It fills your vision and dwarfs you. It is huge and there is art everywhere inside and out. Carvings in stone, mosaics, statues, paintings, stained glass... I could spend days in there. We stayed for the noon church service and prayers. Beautiful. Had a quick bowl of soup- Mom had Kasse Soup ( cheese). I had goulash ( lots of paprika)- yup. And we had our first cup of coffee for the day- great! We took a stroll into old town and along the Rhine. Then we caught a hop-on hop-off bus tour. We sat in the top of the double decker bus- toward the front. We went to the Roman ruins and to my mecca- the oldest perfumery. That's where the term Cologne got started. So cool. Mom bought me some 4711 ( perfume known by the street address- a clasic) and I did a happy dance. We rounded off the day with dinner under a heated canopy. Traditional german food- really really great! Mom had sour beef with dumplings and a cranberry like relish. I had a knuckle of roast pork. It started to rain but we were warm and dry and happy. When the rain let up, we started back to the train station for the journey home...with a few pit stops. We picked up a curry sausage with ketchup and had the vendor wrap it . That was lunch today. We only got one because a lady we met from Georgia referred to it as an "experience." Mom and I really liked it. Maybe we'll try it at home. We got some almond cakes for breakfast and mom got a pretzel. Ok- she shared a bite- one. LOL- the Germans know how to cook. The food there is one of the important sites. It was close, but I think the Cathedral still came out ahead. We got to Best and it was dark and about 53F. The warm taxi was welcome and we were home by 10- a very satisfying day. We are two happy birthday girls!
