Get Lost!!
Last night I walked around to try and familiarize myself with the city. Since I spent so much time trying to find my way to the hostel it was a wise decision.
I stayed close to the hostel and found the second train terminal near a flea market. I walked through and did some window shopping. Nothing really of interest to me.
I planned a little for the today and then went to bed. Boy was the bed ever comfy. I had a good night sleep and woke up around 7:00.
I decided to just walk around and see if I could 'Get Lost'. I know that its not really something you want to try doing. Armed with a map I had breakfast and went on my way.
I didn't take too many DSLR pictures. I did have it with me but there are few tourists here and I would stick out like a sore thumb. I feel like I already do though! I know what your thinking. Then don't wear the bright red shirt that says Canada on it and wave a map in your hand. Hahaha. As hard as it was to do I tried to fit in with the locals.
These are some of the places that I visited today:
- Mercato Originale
- Ponte Monumentale
- Piazza de Ferrari
- Porta Soprana (must see!)
- Casa Di Colombo
- Mura Di Malapaga
- Mura del Molo
- Porta de Molo
- Mura dela Marinetta
- Albergo Di Poveri
- Porta dei Vacca
- Porto Antico
- Corso Italia
...and more
The walls were quite a sight. The old mixed in with the new makes it an interesting view. I tried to think about what it would have looked like long ago. The pieces seem to be there but you have use your imagination. I'm glad they kept these historical buildings. There was a car dealership that was built right at the former entrance to the castle. You can see the arches and original brick work.
It took me a while to get back to my room but I made it. I am happy to report that I did get lost. Several times actually. It was well worth it because I
discovered some really great little places. I had a bite to eat, rested for a few minutes and went out again. This time my journey was to the marina. I was pretty straight forward to get there just very far by foot. I'm actually sitting on a bench on the Corso Italiana overlooking the ocean as I write this. It's overcast today and my pictures don't look that great. There are only a few people walking by. I try to eavesdrop and see if I can pick up some of the Italian they are speaking. 9 time out of ten I can only make out a few words. That's ok, I don't like eves dropping anyway. Hahahaha.
I'm going to make my way back. It will take me about an hour or more. I hope to find a a Gelateria along the way. Mmmmmm. How can I resist! I think I worked for that treat today!

What is a Gelateria?
Top 10 Tips to Remember when visiting Italy
10) Bring your GPS with the correct maps. Don't relay on your cell phone GPS.
9) Eat in - there are grocery stores available. Watch out!! Lots and lots of tempting pizza , focaccia and ice cream around.
8) Buy fruits at the local markets. Enjoy them. Mmmmm.
7) Wear comfy shoes. You'll do lots of walking and cobble stone streets are not the best in sandals.
6) Bring a water bottle. Metal preferably. There are lots of water fountains that you can drink from. Cold fresh water. Ahhhh......free too!!
5) Wear pants or jeans. Especially if you are not visiting in the summer months. Locals don't seem to wear shorts until then. If you don't want to stick out, bring a few extra pairs.
4) Wear sunscreen and a hat. *** Some of you will laugh at me for that because I'm the worst at it!!! But I am doing it! ***
3) Validate train tickets in the yellow machines. Even bus and metro tickets might require you to do that too so just be sure. You will want to avoid any heavy fines!!
2) Have a coffee at one of the hundreds of cafe or bars. Don't take it to go. Stand there and drink up. Really, it is the best. No wonder there are no Starbucks!!!!
1) Ask for help!!! I know this is the toughest thing to do. Most locals are helpful and speak some English. Lots of hand gestures and facial expressions help too. I have the hardest time with this one, but that's why it's my number one. ;)
The Top Ten list is so my students can see how it can be helpful to have lists! Just like we do in class!
