Boa Noite!
Since visiting Christ we have been up and about getting to grips with city life!
Tuesday evening we sampled the delights of a live Reggea band night in Lapa, landing ourselves a free CD - so now Sven can perfect some of the dance moves he picked up (and they dont involve the German hand movements - yey!!)
As yesterday was still a sunny day we headed down to Ipanema beach for a sunbathe amongst the brazilian hotties! Yes boys the bikini's were small and the bums were toned... so thankfully the wind picked up (dramatically in less than 5 mins!) so we packed our sorry white flabby bums away and headed to the end point to watch all the surfers get attacked by the waves and stopped for a Coco drink - they take the top of what looks like a melon (but is in fact a coconut!) and you drink the juice - wicked and very tasty. Then little did we know it but we boarded the bus for our epic journey home. A 40 min journey turned into a 1hour 30ish ride on a hard seated ricketty bus during rush hour! We foolishly got on the bus on the wrong side of the square, so we ended up looping back to where we started, this is all after the bus driver stopped the bus, turned out the lights and got off for his break. After sitting on the bus alone for several mins he eventually gave us the thumbs up when we, confused, asked 'Lapa?', so we waited and eventually the journey home kicked off again!
Today was a bit overcast so we hit the City Centre for some cultural Rio! We headed into Lapa first to sample the Seleron Staircase. We met Seleron himself (the artist) who had acquired thousands of tiles and brought an old back street staircase to life! Was brilliant! Then we walked into Cinelandia (described as the heart of Rio) passing some crazy office blocks - one looks like a rubix cube, another triangular building is a massive catherdral! There were market stalls, business men (in suits - a weird sight in Rio, despite it being a city!), Theatro Municipal and Praca Floriano. We stopped for some vino and bread in the oldest resturant in Rio - Bar Luiz and then a bit tipsy headed back to ride Carioca style on the side of the Tram over Lapa Arches and into Santa Teresa where we picked up some Cachaca ready for homemade Caipirinha's and this is where you find us... sipping our first homemade brailian cocktail almost ready to go into Lapa for some food and Samba dancing... until then Tchau!!! xxx
p.s. the internet is quite slow here and the photo upload's dont work so photo's will come soon!!!
