BULA EVERYBODY!! We said our farewells to Oz and headed to the (what we hoped!) would be the sun filled islands of Fiji. We arrived at Nadi airport at 19:00hrs Fiji time and were immediately greeted by a band of Fijian guitarists dressed in floral attire belting out jazzy tunes which made us forget our woes of leaving the fantastic Australia behind. As we stepped out of the terminal and headed to our hostel the warm air hit us in the face and even though it was dark we knew that when dawn broke we would have found sunshine again! We awoke the following morning and were soon basking in the 30 plus temperatures. Because we had a day spare until our Feejee Experience began we decided to take a day trip to a small island called South Sea which was just 30 mins off the coast of Nadi. When we arrived we realised the island wasnt just small it was half the size of a soccer pitch. However, being in such a remote place being surrounded by palm trees, blue waters and attractive sunbathing ladies isnt the worst thing in the world, trust us! We soon settled on the sun drenched paradise and started on the free grog while topping up our chocolate coloured skin we had sadly lost in Sydney and Melbourne. It wasnt long before we got chatting to fellow travelers, no not the attractive half naked ladies, but a family from New Zealand! Of course being the metrosexual guys we are we somehow got on the conversation of Westlife and spent the next hour belting out tunes with two girls aged 11 and 13 for the entire island to hear! We spent the rest of the day snorkeling and kayaking in the fish filled waters but as Gav took a well earned break dropping Mr and Mrs Brown off at the pool he realised one thing - it was Chris's birthday! Slightly panicked by the fact hed forgot he quickly assembled a couple of Fijians to sneak up on Chris and play a rendition of Happy Birthday. As Chris stood there with cocktail in hand listening to the serenade it dawned on him that he had also forgotten his own birthday - the fool! After embarrassment had passed it time to head back to the main island for Gav and Chris to celebrate his birthday in style. However, the hostel wasnt as exactly the liveliest place in the world that evening so we decided a few jars and a nice meal would suffice and went out for what turned out to be one of the most romantic meals either of us had ever had - with candle lights and orchids adorning the table!!
The next morning it was time to start of Feejee Experience adventure. We waited anxiously for the big green bus to arrive full of people but as we boarded we were shocked to find out there were only 7 people (us making up 2 of them!). Rock on!! We made our way to the first destination which was NatadolaBeach where we were introduced to the group (if you can call it that!) and our guide Tevita (Te) and our driver Willy. As we do, firstly we befriended the only couple on bus, Kirk and Kate, and while frolicking in the giant waves we jokingly told Kirky that the single life was the way to go and to give us 3 days to persuade him. After the waves ran dry we headed of to do some sandboarding, where all seemed to be going splendidly well as Chris sailed straight down the middle of the huge dune as instructed. While Gav on the other hand decided to take a somewhat different route into some bushes, very nearly breaking his neck (as seen in a video clip!). After Chris and everyones elses laughter had subsided we headed to our accommodation for the evening which was set beautifully on the beach front half way between Nadi and Suva. That evening we enjoyed a team dinner and got to know our new "family", even if we were only to be related for 4 days.
To be continued very soon.........
