Giant Steps Are What You Take, Walking on the Moon
So, lets see what has happened since my last post?
- I am moving for sure from Pueblo Libre, I am going to be a little sad to see it go but seriously, I need to move on, make friends, go out, see the rest of Lima etc etc etc
- I got a gym membership at Gold's Gym in Lima, um it was hella expensive, for reals, I was actually shocked. I don't really like it there, people are grossly scantily clad and this has been a place of awkward cultural encounters. Apparently I am fat by Peruvian standadrds, so I was told by the trainer and that I really need to lose weight. Please, anyone reading this, I challenge you to walk the streets of Lima and find people skinnier than me, it is totally possible but I am not by ANY means standing out as a fatty here! I was really upset, this was also impacted by the fact that when the trainer said this he poked my chubb.
- I went to a musical theatrical adaptation of George Orwell's "Animal Farm" called "La Rebellion de los Chanchos" for those who don't understand Spanish that "The Rebellion of the Pigs" it was great! And tickets were cheap, for students only s/. 25 so like a little over $7. The actors were great and I understood it all too. There were some Peruvian cultural jokes but luckly I went with a Peruvian friend who clued me in
- I found a club which I now adore in Barranco which is also great, after the play on Thursday we went out for a drink, I had my heart set on live music so we went to a place called "El Noche" (The Night) and there was a band playing Bob Marley covers, at first it was a bit dead but by the end of the night it was packed, it was awesome to have all of singing along and drinking beer, and ya know, whatever people do at reggae shows. I am not overly impressed that people are allowed to smoke in bars here but whatever. Cover was s/. 15 ($5) which in my opinion was fair. I am thinking about going back this Thursday because they have a band covering Pink Floyds "Dark Side of the Moon". I think this should be a great time!
- I also went to Parque de las Leyendas & Zooilogia. It was great, unfortunately we got there late so lots of the animals were sleeping and we had to leave before I could see the penguins or the coast region. They have the park spilt into regions, Costa, Sierra y Selva (Coast, Moutains and Jungle), they also have an international section that has bears, lions, tigers, a hippo, zebras and more! It also had a botanical garden which we didn't have a chance to see either. There are tons of vendors selling sweets, soda, candy nuts etc but whats awesome is that the prices are the same, they don't gouge you because you're at the zoo like they do at the San Diego zoo or San Francisco zoo. I forgot my camera but remembered my extra batteries, go figure. Next time I go I am going to go earlier and remember my camera. It is also on a site of ancient Pre-Hispanic ruins which is really neat, they also have a place where they make panchama which is food that's roasted in the ground, sort of like when I pig is roasted at a luau in Hawaii. It always smells amazing but every time I get a chance to eat it I am never hungry.
Tomorrow I am going to a Peruvian Contemporary Folk Art Museum and to an artesan fair for artisans with disabilities. This should be amazing, I cannot wait to meet the artists, hopefully they are more friendly then the people who workin the artesan markets near here. I am going to interview some of the artisans to get some information about my upcoming projects I will be designing and I am really excited, it should be an enriching experience. I am hoping in the late afternoon to hit up Starbucks as that seems to have become a psduo tradition for me and it always feels like a little slice of North America, dripping with globalization but whatever, it serves its purpose.
