Captain Tom's Voyage of Discovery
Bulla!
Start spreading the news. I'm leaving today...... That's correct folks, today I go to the city that never sleeps 'New York, New York'.
My time in Fiji has been pretty good! I am in a bit of a rush so I will try to keep this update as brief as possible.
After being ripped off by some locals inviting me for a 'free' kava ceremony in their shop, (kava is the traditional drink of Fiji...its muddy water) I was forced into parting with some of my now very depleted funds to purchase some random crap at said shop...I was not happy. Met some nice people at my hostel and managed to fit in a game of monopoly and a few games of pool so the day was not a complete disaster.
Another early start the next day was called for as I was off on a tour of the Yasawa group of Islands. After jumping on to a rather old, open top bus I boarded the 'Yasawa flyer II' to take me out to my first Island stop. From this point on the YFII will be referred to as 'the big yellow boat'. After four hours on the yellow boat, where I bumped into TEAM CANADA from my NZ tour, I got ready to get off and watched as my bag was thrown overboard into some small wooden boat. I felt a little better when I realized that that boat was going to the same Island I was. On arrival at the island, Nanuya Lailai, we jumped off our small wooden boat and took our first steps on the NICE beach that was to be our home for the next two days. Well, everyone else got off nicely, I fell in the water!
Now all the islands have some similar features so I will save time and tell you them all now instead of repeating myself: food is crap; showers are cold and come from a salt water source; there are plenty of hammocks (which I must now say are the greatest invention known to mankind) and the people are really nice (locals and tourists alike).
There are a few events which warrant a mention so here goes:
I managed to get sunburned on the first island. The reason being is that I forgot to put on sun cream. However, it wasn't nice + evenly spread sunburn - it was concentrated to the front of my legs. You will see what I mean when I get home and compare it to the back of my legs which are still white.
I was the only one from my group going to Island number two - Naviti - so was a bit apprehensive when the only people getting off the yellow boat at my stop were a German family who couldn't speak English. No need to worry as there were loads of great people, including a youngish Scottish couple who were going to my next stop with me.
Island number three - Kuata - was a good laugh. I spent most of my time either reading, listening to my I Pod or playing cards. ON the last night we were taught the 'Bulla dance'. Hehehe it is basically a superior version of the Macarena which I will be teaching you all on my return. After the Bulla dance we were all forced into playing some random game: Basically you ahd to dance to some music and when it stopped you had to stand still and not move at all... I am sure that was a regular at parties when we were all little kiddy winks...Well I managed to come third! Hehehe. I still believe I should have won but there was no point complaining as the judge was a Fijian guy and the other two remaining contestants were both attractive young ladies!
The last island stop was South Sea Island, which is smaller than a football pitch. Nothing much to report.
Well I am back In Nadi now and guess who I met yesterday? Yes indeed - Miss Rosie Wild. What a small world? Well I have to go now as my departure time grows ever near and I have post cards to do!
Ta ta! Tomx
