Tom - World Tour!
So we returned back to La Paz for the last 4 nights of our trip to Mexico on the basis of some good parties! It was to be the craziest 4 days in Mexico so it was well worth the return! We stayed back at a hostel just across the street from the first place we stayed but unfortunately it too had no hot water! On our first day back we decided to walk to one of the nearest beaches up the coast for snorkeling which we had estimated to take us one hour. When we arrived there wasn't much there so we decided to walk to the next. It turned out that all the beaches close to La Paz were not suitable so we ended up at this random truck stop after walking for 2 1/2 hours having a beer in the middle of nowhere and too far out to walk back! So we decided to carry on hailing the next available cab which pulled over and picked us up. It was heading to the ferry port where the bus had chucked us off the first time with a woman who was a religious preacher who on the whole journey decided to give me translated English scripts about how she could help me; however she didn't seem to be able to take us back to La Paz!! Once we lost her we tried to ask the cab driver the cost of getting to the beach as we had little money on us but, it took us 5 miles for us to explain to the driver that we only had half of the money he wanted so he duly through us out in the middle of the desert! Kind of fed up with the whole idea of ever walking to a beach and pretty determined to make it we decided to continue walking as we were about a 5 hour walk of La Paz! Eventually we managed to hitch a lift with this family who were heading to the beach and it turned out to be the best stroke of luck so far. Not only did we get a lift back that day via the best snorkeling spots on the map they also took us out the following 2 days back up the coast!!
After a beer stop and a beer opening session (just out of town away from the police!) we headed back up the coast where we had walked the previous day. It was definitely Ray Mears eat your heart out as we ate oysters from the rocks that they had picked up at one beach, Pichilingue and then we were sent out to catch Sea Urchins at Tecolote with our masks and a tyre leaver he picked out from the back of his truck. With a bit of soy sauce and lime they made up some cocktail in side one of these urchins which we then duly ate!! On the way back he decided to show us where to catch lobster however we did some off roading and got stuck in hot wet mud just of beach Balandra! It took us about 30 mins to push this truck out of the mud! The next day again we headed back up the coast with a net in the back of his truck to show us Mexican fishing. We ended up wading through a mangrove with mud up to our waste walking on oysters and trying not to stand on the sting rays! We caught loads of shrimp and crabs (which decided to take a chunk out of my finger) and fish that we cooked on the beach back at Tecolote after hastily packing up as he informed us that it was illegal to fish without a permit!!! It was pretty cool though as we made a fire on the beach and ate our catch while the sun went down.
Back in La Paz it was our last night to head out so we went for some drinks in one of the local bars and then ended up in this club on the sea front which just happened to be having a Salsa night. We ended up learning to Salsa we some Mexican student girls who were out with a bigger group of students who took us to a party in the middle of nowhere in La paz and then back to one of the guys house where we continued to party till 6.30 am!! You guys are mad!
So it was the end of our stay in Mexico after our recovery from the night before, we had to head back the next day on a 27 hour coach ride back to LA. Mexico has been a good warm up for what is to come!!
