More from Cairns...
MONDAY
Everyone had a good night last night as we were all given meal vouchers from Oz experience that meant we could have anything off the menu at a bar called the Woolshed for only $6.50! Of course I went for rump steak, the most expensive thing on the menu, and to wash it down our driver got 5 free jugs of beer, so all in all a fairly cheap evening!
Today we woke up at a leisurely pace, so leisurely in fact that we uncharacteristically missed the free breakfast on offer at our hostel, but sleep held higher priority after the football the night before.
We walked into town at about midday to look around and to book our Cape Tribulation trip and Kim's skydive. With all that sorted, we grabbed some lunch and went to sit by the lagoon to soak up the glorious sunshine. We bumped into Jess, Catherine, and Lucy, 3 girls from our Whitsunday's boat and they invited us out for a few bevvies that night in celebration of Jess's birthday. We duly accepted the invitation and went back to our hostel to get dinner before leaving again at 10pm.
The meeting place was agreed to be Gilligan's, a hostel in the centre of Cairns, so we pitched up and bumped into Will and Catherine from our Fraser Island trip. The other 3 girls must have moved on by then as they were nowhere to be seen, so we sat and had a drink or two with Will and Catherine before dragging them to Paddy O'Brien's where the girls had relocated themselves. A few more celebratory drinks later and Kim and I were ready for bed, so we left the three girls on their way to the Woolshed and made the short walk back out to our hostel. Kim had a 7:40am pick up the next morning for her skydive, so zzzz's were being pushed out pretty soon after we got back...
TUESDAY
Kim's Skydive day!!!!! She awoke at 6:30 and organized herself before leaving on the shuttle at 7:40. I did manage to wake up and wish her good luck, but konked out again until 8:30ish when I got up and went to book another night in the hostel. What a palaver - apparently they were too busy and they had booked our room out already, but we could have separate rooms later that day if we wanted, but would have to fully check out then check back in again later to do so blah blah blah... It was far too early to be arguing with them so I just said ok and ran back to the room to pack up not only my stuff but Kim's as well! 20 minutes later I was back in reception giving back keys, sheets, and crockery, and getting back a small fortune in deposits for my troubles. With it all finally sorted out, I left for the town centre to rendezvous with Will and Catherine as we had arranged to meet for a barbie by the lagoon. I bought the sausages; they were bringing buns, onion, and tomato ketchup. The barbie went down a treat, and with 13 sausage between three of us, we didn't go hungry! We spent the whole day there, swimming, eating and frisbeeing, until 5ish when Kim got back and the sun started setting. After this morning's hassle, we investigated alternative hostels and booked into the Global Palace for Wednesday and Thursday night, then we came and did internet stuff for you, our loving audience.
Planning a quiet one tonight as we are off to Cape Tribulation early tomorrow morning, and tomorrow night our friends Paul, Matt, Danny and Marie arrive in town so it could be a big one, added to the fact that it is the State of Origin 3rd test!! It's all happening so we're gonna go get dinner sorted and chill out.
Just think, next time I'm on here it could be my last report from Oz... :(
Lotsa love
Tom xx
