CAIRNS - Friday 26th October to Monday 29th October
After 25 hours and four flight changes we arrived in Cairns, Australia. We was picked up from the airport by the hotels pick up service and soon arrived at our hotel Queens Court Cairns. We was shown to our small but clean and comfortable room. Despite the fact we had paid £50 a night for this room we was having to share a bathroom. We thought perhaps it might just be with another room but no it was the whole floor which had about 10 rooms. There was a bathroom for male and female and it didn't seem too bad. We freshened up and took a walk into Cairns. It was full of life with a wonderful esplanade to walk along by the sea. We wandered past bars and restaurants and looked at the menu boards to see where we wanted to eat and was totally blown away by how expensive it was. If we was on holiday it probably would be different but we could not justify spending what they wanted to charge for a meal. We found a food court and opted for buying a plate of all you can eat on a Chinese stall. It was tasty and just enough for what we wanted. We had a walk back along the esplanade and was distracted by loud screeching noises and a lot of activity in the sky. We looked up and was surrounded by what looked like massive bats called flying foxes, amazing never seen nothing like it.
When we returned to hotel Lee booked our first trip in Queensland to the Daintree Forest, Moss Gorge and Cape Tribulation.
Saturday 27th Ocotober
Up early and after having our very basic breakfast of toast and vegi mite which we loved we was picked up at 7.30 for our trip. We had a few more pickups before we was taken along the coast road of Cairns onto the Captain Cook Highway towards Mossman Gorge. Our bus driver and tour guide was called Mark and had a great Ozi accent which is what we would have hoped for on our first trip.
Nestled in the World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest, Mossman Gorge contains the oldest, continuously surviving rainforest on earth. the forest has managed to survive for over 135 million years and, with the right protection, is expected to thrive for generations to come.
We also visited Cape Tribulation the only place on the planet where reef meets Rainforest. Here we stopped and had lunch and experienced our first taste of TimTams, a chocolate biscuit bar very similar to version of a Penguin Bar and we was hooked.
Very difficult to put into words our trip today as we saw and hear so many beautifl things and it was such a lot to take in. On our trip back towards Port Douglas we stopped to take more photos and was shown the Island in the distance called Batt Reef, part of the Great Barrier Reef. This was the reef where Steve Irwin was snorkelling and sadly got stabbed by a Stingray in 2006.
Sunday 28th October
This morning we decided to have a walk into Cairns City Centre and use Mac
Donald's for the free wifi as they were charging something ridiculous at the hotel. It was a very hot and we was walking along the Esplande was impressed with all the families that were out and enjoying quality family time something we lack in the UK. All picnic benches were occupied and the free BBQs were all in use. The large pool situated at the edge of Esplande was full with families and we decided that after using wifi we would go back to the hotel pick up our towels and head back to join them. The wifi in McDonald's was so slow so we gave up and headed back to the hotel to pick up our things. We was a bit tired after our long flights and day out yesterday so decided to just have a quick nap on the bed. About 3 hours later we woke up and realised we had missed the best part of the day and it would be too late to head into Cairns so we just stayed near the hotel. I got a bottle of Sauv Blanc for the supermarket as we just had something to eat and got packing for our next stop MISSION BEACH.
