Hi all - thanks again for messages
Right more time to update!! now - I have been a very busy boy - which explains the lack of Journal entries. Today I have managed to sort out the rest of my time in infectious diseases - this is a massive coup for me as although plastics was interesting (especially the ops that I saw on cleft lip & palates) it was I wasn´t that keen on the rest. But it was good to contrast to England & good to get experience in something I´ve not done before... Also they made me do a presentation of My Life (as Gary Barlow once memorably sang) in the UK, and med school.... In Portuguese - and I managed it (with a little help!) But It´s cool - because 3 weeks ago - I´d have never thought I could have done it
So plastics was picking up just as I left - typical - I was seeing quite a lot of interesting pathology and various strange diseases (amazingly bad keyloid scars involving entire neck from one cut whilst shaving, a man with an amazingly large head (I, and everyone else has no idea what is wrong with him - he looked like the most severe case of hyperadrenalism I´ve ever heard about). Also have seen a large amount of babies with various syndromes which is both very interesting and extremely sad. I also got to see several cleft lip & palate ops - which were amazing to watch and it is probably the only surgery I´d consider (and maybe trauma). Also was getting more involvedd with patients with was better - though I struggled when a patient with Osteomyelitis askeed me if he was going to lose his leg!! (he wasn´t - buts its not in my learning portuguese book!!!! and sign language for loosing your leg is easy, for not loosing your leg is harder! But I got there in the end - he was pleased!) Right thats work over with now fun...
1st Hangover, after 1st Brazilian BBQ - great night a really nice brazilian guy tried to drink me under the table - and chundered!!! Haha (I said he should meet my sister - or you Waff) It was basically with all the opthalmologists who just had a random BBQ and I was randomly invited! Very funnny night ended up with me passing out and waking up fully clothed, disorientated, sweating (think about fully clothed, hungover 32C!) and thirsty - but still got into work and didn´t make a fool of myself!! Also one of the plastic surgeons took me out with his lady - which was cool.
Stayed in a hostel in Urca - Safest place in Rio near Sugar loaf - so was able to get the pictures without any hastle which was nice!! Good walk around Urca - its a tranquil placee - kinda undiscovered despite being in Rio! And there aren´t any high rises - so its a lovely change of pace! Went out to beach with a Brazilian girl and German guy I met in the Hostel - ti was a good laugh, and saw an amateur Carnaval parade - which was very cool - but I wasn´t dressed for it!!! Then went out in Lapa (biggest night spot in Rio) and had a really good time in an awesome Samba club... this was on 3 floors and I ended up dancing for 4 hours (must be the Caparinha´s) - local VERY strong coctail with sugar cane fermented booze!!!
So, subsequently had my 2nd hangover - managed to explain to a pharmacist that I didn´t want to Raul (slang here for hurl!) after he picked himself off the floor from laughing at a pastie/green English man talking in slang Carioca he gave me some Domperidone (I think!) Went to the beach and got rained on (a la Croatia Nick - turned out nice again) - Nothing was dry, but found a restaurant and watched Romario score his 990 goal!
Today Infectious diseases has been excellent - I´ve seen Dengue fever, suspected Malaria, ? 1st occasion of Aids defining illness in someone with HIV (it wasn´t luckily) and a pregnant woman with Aids with neurological Toxoplasmosis... along with the shock/ stress of quite alot of these patients being very ill/ very sad stories (especially the pregnant lady) Its been a lot more interesting and inspriing.
Anyway best go Byeee
