1/ Thurs - went to Rio - looked around Copacabana & Ipanema. Fri - Worked & Then went to one of the med students houses, had a laugh & generally chilled. Sat - Worked - boo!! Til 5 Boo, Boo!!! Then went and watched the local kids playing football. Sun Worked - Boo, boo boo, then was taken out by my Prof for a lovely meal & chileld at Ipanema all day, finishing with a Samba experience & Beers, Today I have been mostly working
2/ So Thurday - I couldn´t find boss man so went to Rio!! Couldnt ´find the ´safe bus´so went on the flavela express - which was fine - no probs... despite my acent being like the policeman in ´allo ´allo! (good up to date reference there for the kids). So looked around Copacabana & Generally liked it: It is very touristy & big & brash & reasonably dirty, but desite that - really welcoming and lovely obviously!!! Ipanema is a nicer place all round, cleaner and less ´spoilt´. So, after walking around - buying nik-naks & generally getting my bearings - i headed home, before dark - heeding the warnings of locals. Everyone seemed very impressed that I went to the beach Solzinho (on my own) when I got back, it semed like the normal thing form to do - When in Rome (hey Andy T?).PS Got burnt - school boy!!
Fri - Surgery - just got Ans email and have to agree - that Being in surgery is just as boring here unless fully involved/ trying to work out what to say in Portugues - which can sometimes take the length of an operation... but finished early and was taken out by the team to a lovely restaurant by the beach, and had a ridiculously nice meal. Then went out to one of the med students houses and chilled there - chating and joking basically. Also met one of the Pharmacists who works in the centre here for HIV/AIDS - so he said he´d show me around! This is a real coup as the programme is world renound - Brazil was the pioneer of cheap anti-retro virals (anti-aids drugs) and has an excellent AIDS programme. Also got them to teach me lots of naughty words - some things never change!!
Sat - worked - Very knackered with all this work malarky - not cool... But remembering that carnival is soon! Saw my first butt-job!!! I did think that she could get the arse se wanted by walking up the stairs of this hospital for 3 months (13 foors) but kept schtum... Then saw breast augmentation (boob job) & liposuction. So I thinkI have the whole house now. This was made funnier (to me!) by realising that my boss looks like the ´funny´guy from *Mash and one of the juniors is a bilingual Jack Black - this kept me smirking for a while- whilst I tried to get them to do stuff - that there ´characters´would do, simple things....
Sun- Worked again - breast reduction this time... then my kindly professor took me out for an absolutely awesome steak!! Genius! Then spent my first afternoon on Ipanema beach - tried to get into the beatiful zone, but was stopped at the enterance!!! Banter. But it is very intimidating - everyone is Stacked - I can see why they all work out so much - Nico T - you´d look normal here!!???!?!? Great fun all round - & very chilled. THen went to get a bus but was stopped by drumming noise - Went to investigate and stumbled into Blocco Afro-Raggae´s practice sesssion for the carnival - the carnival has lots of different´teams´or blocco´s and this was one of them. They were awesome. I cannot desbribe what it felt like to be there, without getting all misty eyed and sentimental. But I´ll try: I felt unbelievably happy, couldn´t help smiling & dancing (despite not being p**sed) and the drums kept shaking in my chest. It really sounds cheesey - bt everyone should come just to experience it, the kids that were there were going crazy - it was hilarious, kept thinking of Amelié & Ruby (Toms top tip - bring kids here they will love it - & Brazilians love kids). Then despite my credit cards being cancelled/suspeded (NOT IMPRESSED!!!) managed to get home!
Unfortunnately missed my shift in the ER - due to my misunderstanding - but have been assured that I´ll have lots to do when I sort it - I missed 7 gunshot wounds (!?!?) apparently.
Take care everyone & thanks for the messages
PS Big thank you dad for Rugby result - it made me smile a lot!!! Harry is a legend!!
