Departure Day and Dar Es Salam
Hi :)
Welcome to my blog for Tanzania 2014.... I am lay in bed in Dar Es Salam after a very long and hectic day.
This week I finished my second year of teaching and said goodbye to my little Year 3's on Thursday. I have exchanged them for 37 teenagers and 4 staff from Ivybridge, Devon. On Friday I traveled down to Ivybridge on the train and didn't really find much to be honest. I decided the best option was to head into Plymouth on the bus.... Which just happened to pull up as I was stood next to the stop. As I got off the bus I saw a crowd... my traveller instinct kicked in and within 5 mins I had a 3rd row ticket to watch hit play 'One man, two Guvnors.' A great show and a great night!
The next day expedition began. I met the team and after introducing myself to parents and getting into the role as leader we left for Heathrow. After a stressful check in.... Imagine a sea of teenagers all wearing the same t-shirt expecting you to know where to go, what to do and if they will be able to do this and that...... eventually we were all checked in and through to the gate. It was a rough flight to start with but then it settled down.... As we took off the sun was setting over London and I woke up just as the sun was rising over the UAE. We landed in Dubai and I immediately felt a buzz! I have thought long and hard about teaching in Dubai and moving out there... After watching a few videos on the plane about Dubai and feeling the way I felt when I arrived it's almost certain I will be doing that soon!
After a few hours wait we boarded our final flight to Tanzania. The entire group were very tried by this point but remained in good spirits! We arrived in Dar Es Salam to mayhem! Arrival cards had to be filled in, of course I knew what to put on them..., and 42 bags had to be collected, what could go wrong!?
First of all... I was questioned as to why there was such a big group of us... I had to hand over a list of names and was eventually allowed through. Next... I found out we were a bag down. The kid had also lost his luggage bar code sticker so at present he is bag-less and waiting to find out where it is! Not a great start but he took it well and doesn't really seem too bothered! :)
We have just had tea, which can only be described as home made African Nandos... crucified chicken but very nice! :) I then briefed the team about the expedition and everything seems to be going well...
The kids and teachers are great and travelling is just as good as it always was!
Now it's time for sleep as breakfast is at 5:30am before we have an 8 hour coach ride to Camp Kidia in the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro.
Night :) x
