I woke up about 7:30am and the sun was already trying to make the air thick and stifling. A swim was just the thing to counter that. I was joined by small fish breaking the surface all around me.
After I took a shower, Peter and I took the dingy and made it over to Mamacita's for breakfast. I had coffee and a bagle. Peter had eggs and plantains with toast.
Back on the boat, the first thing Peter wanted to do was go up the mast and check out the connection to the Satellite dish. I manned the electric winch.
Peter reported that the connection was a mess and he was going to have to take the antenna off and try repairing it on the boat. So he down, gathered tools and up again he went.
Work aloft, sitting in a boson's chair, is very trying work. You're always fighting the motion of the boat and wind. You have to be very careful you don't drop anything and it's just plain awkward and exhausting. After about 30 minutes, Peter was ready to come down with the antenna dome.
The rest of the afternoon was spent trouble shooting until we found the bad connection and then attempting a repair. Peter and I worked well together through this process. My experience in reliability and experience in failure analysis proved helpful to isolate the failure. But Peter's dogged determination to effect the repair pressed us on long after I would have given up in favor of just buying a new connector in San Juan.
Late afternoon now, Peter insisted on going back up the mast and re-installing the antenna dome. I thought he was pushing himself past a judicious level of physical ability and I thought he was taking way too long.
Finally he came down totally spend, and shaking with fatigue, unable to complete the job. I helped him out of the Bosun chair and went down to make some tea. The salon was a mess with tools strewn everywhere. I cracked open a Bud and drank about half of it in one gulp.
After a short rest, we got all the tools put back and restored order to the salon. Peter went back to his cabin for more rest and I took a swim and then showered to get ready for whatever the evening would bring.
After his rest, Peter showered and we went over to Mamacita's for dinner and drinks. It was well after sunset but the bar was empty so we took the same seats we had last night and ordered. Peter ordered the pork and I ordered the Churasco or skirt steak with mashed potatoes. It is a thin cut that is marinated all the previous night.
As we were enjoying our meal, the bar started filling up and the people kept coming and coming. We were sitting at the end of the bar so we couldn't really see where all these people were going but it was obvious that this was the happening place in town tonight. By far most of the people were locals and the preferred language was Spanish.
Then several locals came in carrying big bongo drums and set up in the back and started playing. And the people kept coming. We had a great time people watching and listening to the primal rhythms of the drums. Then it started to pour and the crowd dispersed, looking for cover. We stayed through it all but finally called it a night about 10:30.
