Title: Landfall, Bermuda
I woke up at 0430 for my watch and I could clearly see the coast of Bermuda and the waves breaking on the reef all along the coast. I took the helm and headed for the buoy marking the channel entrance, still several miles ahead.
The channel entrance is clearly marked with channel buoys but only about 60 feet wide. Once inside, the bay opens up into a large lagoon with lots of room for yachts to anchor.
We made it over to the Customs dock and had to fill out the typical paper work. Then we anchored off the Bermuda Dingy and Sport Club, which I will refer to as the Yacht Club.
After anchoring, we cleaned the boat, inflated the dingy, and I volunteered to go up the mast to retrieve the errant genoa halyard.
At lunch we headed to the yacht club for a shower but it was closed so then we headed over to the town proper and looked for a place to eat and get a beer. Barry had been here 18 years ago and couldn't believe the changes. One particular yachty-type bar had been converted to an upscale restaurant called Tavern by the Sea. We ordered lunch and despite the $19.95 price, I ordered the fish and chips which I will forever compare to that served at Fish & Chips at the Oceanside harbor, CA. I was disappointed.
After lunch I used the wifi to check my mail and work on my blog.
About 5pm we headed over to the yacht club and took showers and changed into clean clothes. Then we enjoyed a few drinks at happy hour and before long we were engaged in friendly conversation with other yachtys. The club house is a two story affair and from the upper deck, gives a great view of the harbor and sunset. What a great place! I love it.
