Andy and Tim Tour the World
First Stop New York
The journey was tough. The security at Heathrow was so tight it held everything up, because it took so long we almost missed our flight but for a half mile sprint across the terminal.
The rain kind of spoiled our big arrival in the Big Apple. We could hardly see any of the famous New York skyline as we went over the Hudson River.
The Jazz in the Park hostel was packed when we got there, but very lively. It was mixed dorms which was a new experience. It worked out grand as everyone was quite conscious of each others privacy.
Our first proper experience was the night we arrived - we went to Times Square. It was so bright it felt like daylight.
To get a real flavor of the city on the 6th we got a helicopter tour round Manhattan. We got an excellent view and it felt that we could have reached out and touched the flame of the statue of liberty. We saw the hole that was the World Trade Centre too. The tour guide told us that it stood one and a half times as tall as any other building in New York.
On the 7th we went to the Natural History museum it was massive! It was $10 to get in and an extra $6 to get into the planetarium. The planetarium was amazing and well worth the extra money.
That day we decided to validate our Amtrak Train Ticket and get our tickets to Washington at Penn Station. The queue was so big it ended up taking an hour and a half. The queue seemed to be the same when we went past the next time too so glad we didn't leave it till the last minute.
The best thing about New York was the various amounts of people we met. We where christened New Yorkers by an old guy that shines shoes on Broadway, he managed to con us out of $5. We where accosted by two scotch drinking security guards when we asked them for directions because we were Scottish. Also the fellow travelers that we met in the hostel which provided a great relaxed atmosphere by putting on a BBQ which lead on to about 7 or 8 of us going out.
The 8th was an easy day after all the chaos and preparation for the trip to Washington. Andy went to the Rockefeller Center and the Empire State Building. I milled about the hostel and had a stroll in Central Park as the weather was glorious.
And so to Washington...
