Up at 5:00 am to get saddled up for the drive to the airport and the plane ride to Kas. Hectic.
Kas was built over the ancient port city of Phellos. Although the Teke peninsula has been occupied since the stone age it seems Kaş was founded by the Lycians, and its name in Lycian language was Habesos or Habesa. It was a member of the Lycian League, and its importance during this time is confirmed by the presence of one of the richest Lycian necropolis.
The ancient Greeks later gave it the name of Antiphéllos or Antíphilos, since it was the harbor in front of the city of Phellos. During the Roman period, Antiphéllos was famous for exporting sponges and timber. Pliny the Elder refers to the town in the fifth book of his Naturalis Historia. After 395 the town became part of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine) and during the early Middle Ages was a bishop's see - and as Antiphellus is still a titular see.
.
The town suffered because of Arab incursions, then was annexed (under the name of Andifli) to the Anatolian Sultanate of Rüm, led by the Seljuks. After the demise of the Seljuks, it came under the Ottomans.
In 1923, because of the Exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey after the Greco-Turkish War, the majority of the population, which was of Greek origin, left the town for Greece. Abandoned Greek houses can still be seen at Kaş.
Modern day Kas is filled with scuba diving boats, and yachts making trips to the Blue Cave, and the sunken city of Kekova.
Pegasus Airlunes has a 30 pound weight limit on the one bag they allow you to check. We paid an additional $75 for being overweight. Yikes! The airport is very modern. The flight down was a little over an hour. We got the emergency row so we ended with more legroom than our "business class" seat on Air France out of Paris.
The drive from Dalaman to Kos is I2 hours through the mountains. Salih had to drive about 25 miles per hour to allow Andrea G. to stay close. She was driving like an old woman. But, we finally arrived. Thank God.
After settling in, Ann Mann and Mickey took a dip in the infinity pool in our villa. It's salt water. I hate to admit it but I ordered cheeseburgers and fries for lunch. I asked them for mayonnaise. That delayed the order cause I am sure they ran around for 20 minutes trying to figure out what mayonnaise is!
Andrea and Salih are a little stressed due to the hotel's mix ups with reservations. They managed to go to the local city government and get the legal details and requirements of their marriage taken cate of. But all is well, even though tempers may be flared.
I met Salih's mother and father tonight for the first time. They are very nice people. As we, probably overwhelmed by the events of the day. But, they clearly love Andrea which makes them aces in my book!
