Venturing out into the big sprawling city of Accra so far has been a great experience. We have been to the local 'spot' for a few drinks, and been introduced to the 'hip life' music and the 'Asonto' dance craze that is sweeping Ghana by storm (no I have not yet mastered this technique, but our new friend Katrina is working on making sure we have the moves before we leave here! Hmmm, we will see!).
Today we went on our first tro' ride in a small, rickety, rusty old mini-bus type contraption, with about nineteen people squeezed in and which flew down the roads and hurtled along the dual carrriageways whilst we hung on for dear life (and whilst one of our volunteers kindly tried to hold the door closed so me and one other volunteer didnt' fall out!). They clearly adhere only to the rules of 'crazy driver', seeing as that's what everyone else is doing. We arrived sweaty, ruffled, and with wonderfully frizzy hair and wonky sunglasses, but overall I think it was quite a relatively good journey. Or at least one we should get used to as being so!
We went to the local markets, where they sell everything you can imagine, from peanut butter and humongous snails (that they eat!!!), to thousands of shoes and bags, and trinkets, carvings and other African curious. On one floor we found reams and reams of brightly coloured kente African cloth, which attracted the female volunteers who have been here a little longer like little buzzing bee's they were so excited about it - clearly they know something about African dress and adapting here that we don't yet! Watch this space, soon you will see photos of me following trend I am sure, apparantly most volunteers can't resist for long!
We then went to visit a volunteer who lives in Accra, and got to sample even more yummy street food, and get a taste of what living as a volunteer here will really be like! It was nice to see her flat and get an idea of what our places might be like.
It's been a long day, and I am filthy from the pollution, dust and sweat! Time for a hot shower and a cool dip in the pool before bed (still making the most of these luxuries!)
