Forget trains, planes and automobiles - try 28 hours to Ko Samui by taxi, train, subway, 2 coaches, 2 minibus a boat and a car - oh it's good to be back in Thailand!
We left our hotel at 8am on Tuesday, thinking we'd fly to Bangkok then get a quick train and ferry to Ko Samui - we probably should have investigated this a bit more before we got to Bangkok (!) as when we arrived at the train station (via train, a 10 min walk and then subway from the airport) we were told there was no more space on the sleeper trains and we'd have to get a coach (11 hours) then a minibus (1 hour) then a boat (2 hours) then we'd have to get across the island to our guesthouse!
However as per usual this didn't quite turn out to the the case - we were kicked off the coach after 11 hours in the middle of nowhere at about 6am, after waiting there for 2 hours we were put on a minibus, we got off that 20 mins later by the water expecting to get on a boat, after 15mins we were put back on another coach (by the way, during this whole thing you are not told where you are going or how long it will take!) after an hour we eventually got on to the boat. We all sat down inside and were then told that we had to pay extra to sit indoors! On principle we all got up and walked out to sit around the edge of the boat, in hindsight this was a bad idea as I am now very sunburnt and am sporting a red streak across my forehead! After 2 hours on the boat we got on a minibus to Bophut beach. We checked into our hotel only to be told to get in a car to take us to our room! Fortunately it was only a 2 min drive to the bungalows across the road.
The bungalow is pretty basic after what we've got used to but the views from the pool across the bay can't be beaten and we plan on staying here for a while, to relax and do nothing, and also because we really need to stay in one place long enough for someone to do our laundry!
