On Wednesday we drove to Tauranga and stayed near Mount Maunganui; in the morning we did a high speed dinghy boat trip from Hahei which went around beautiful Cathedral Cove (which featured in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe) and other places around the Coromandel Peninsula. We also visited Hot Water Beach (where you can dig a geothermal hot pool in the sand - we just had a paddle, as the water was really hot!) and Opoutere beach. We didn't do much in Tauranga as we didn't like the feel of the area. On Thursday we drove to Rotorua and visited Hell's Gate which is a geothermal resort. For dinner, we cooked monkfish and potatoes in the campsite's geothermal steam oven (perfectly cooked and delicious) and served with country slaw. Today (Friday) we spent another night in Rotorua and visited Te Puia, which is a Maori cultural and geothermal reserve. We also visited the Green and Blue Lakes then we had a stone-grilled meal which we cooked at the table ourselves on the hot stones provided (Dom had beef, chicken, lamb and venison and I had lamb). Tomorrow we're travelling to Taupo via Wai-o-tapu.
