This island was really just a hop and a skip to the coast from Sao Paulo and a nice coastal route up to rio for later. You get to it by ferry, once on the island you can use their buses that either go north or south.
So we had cleverly booked and paid at our hostel in advance... Trouble was neither of us knew exactly where that was on the island. Its an island!! How hard can it be! So we hoped on the north bus after alot of hand waving and Spanglish and then proceeded to argue at each stop about whether this was the one! After what seemed like forever in the heat under a 20 kg backpack I thought I saw what looked like the name so we got off at the next stop and found it signposted all the way from the bus stop!! Haha
We arrived at our hostel which was in fact a villa! Pool, jacuzzi, chocolate cake for breakfast!!! extra stars for this place.
The island has something like 360 waterfalls, so we did some investigation and found none were accessible by road. Seems we had to hike and we only had a day we chose ONE waterfall down south. This was an awesome find, only 1 other couple was there and the falls consisted of a series of smooth rocks slipping into bubbling pools ...excellent for bum sliding, and that was what we did.
What the locals didn't tell us (well they could've) is to be careful of the blood suckers. These damn things are not Mosquitos, smaller. I looked down after our hike back and my legs from my knees down are dotted in blood! On closer inspection there were tiny open wounds in your skin. I smeared my legs in antibacterial cream and detol and emptied a can of peaceful sleep on myself. Tim didn't care, but the next day his bites swell up like giant mozzie bites and itched like crazy! I was totally not impressed! We were on our way to Rio to run and the streets in our costumes now it looks like I have leprosy or something!
