Fortaleza and Cumbuco:
To recover from our jungle fever we decided the only cure was to hit the beach bebe! We made our way downtown Fortaleza and managed to catch the local bus to Cumbuco for the morning, a beach just 35km northwest of Fortaleza. We arrived at this quaint town and walked through what seemed to be the only really big snazzy hotel on the beach front in the hopes of finding an English speaking person who could explain what time the bus returned to Fortaleza. The hotel seemed quite deserted so we walked all the way through to their patio and pool area and onto their beach and made ourselves cozy under a coconut tree. It was midweek so the beach was ours to share with a few locals who all tried to sell us paintings, horse rides and coconuts. The water although not Carribean blue was hot hot hot! :) after enough sun and sand we refreshed ourselves in the hotel pool and showers then walked all the way through again to find our bus waiting there...good timing! Still no sign of any staff or guests at the hotel...they probably have us on camera and thinking blimmen Brits! (we get asked if we're from Britain all the time. it's Tim - you can only come from Britain with skin that white with red patches!) haha.
We spent the afternoon walking through Fortaleza. The city reminded us of Durban - a laid back beach city with a revamped promenade, sixties style concrete flats lining the bay, a string of surfers at sea waiting in the line up and a harbour close enough to read the names of the ships coming in to dock. They had restored a few of the old houses along the beach front promenade and put up huge displays with pics of how they looked back in their heyday, this was mixed up with some good graffiti. It was very effective, and the locals seem to make good use of the new upgraded promenade as skateboarders whizzed past us and we passed a few gym and Pilates classes on the sand.
As we watched the sun setting on the pier a complete stranger walked up to us and invited us for a drink on the beach coz he wanted to practice his English! Suuuure! Why not! How friendly are these people! So we ordered a drink and had a convo with Carlos (every Brazilian is called Carlos!). He was pretty good but needed a few seconds for each sentence. We watched the expression on his face with amusement as he looked for the right words and put them order in his head before speaking.
That night we took a night bus to Natal. (not kwazulu natal just yet!)
