A great place to make movies! Monument Valley is one of those places that evoke memories of all those Hollywood "Cowboy & Indian" movies, one could amost see John Wayne riding his horse around the sweeping ben of a Butte with dust flying everwhere!
We had a fabulous 4 wheel drive tour given to us by Harrison, a Navajo Indian whose family had lived in this area for centuries. Harrison loved this country and shared stories about the land, the people, the customs and the songs. Harrison sung to us one of the songs of his people, in the centre of one of the enormous Messa, with his voice serenading of the sandstone walls. Hauntingly beautiful as we lay on the ground watching the sun set over these monoliths in Monument Valley.
The drive lasted over 3 hours as Harrison took us to Buttes and Messas in the Valley, all with their own names; Elephant, Sleeping Dragon, Three Sisters, Dog, Camel, Mitten 1 and Mitten 2, and on the names went. It seemed like every rock formation took on its own personality and name. Harrison explained that for the Navajo, there was Mother Earth and Father Sky who were their Creator.
It was a sacred place to visit. A place full of story, mystique and timeless beauty. The creative forces behind the formation of Monument Valley have produced a most remarkable landscape of astounding monuments made from sandstone, water, and the passage of time.
