They best way of getting from bangkok to Phuket is definitely flying. It's only an hour flight but, even plus all the checking in time, transfers to and from the air port, it's still half the time it would have taken by land.
The airports here are easy to navigate there relatively small. They have plenty of signs and if you do get stuck you can always ask.
There is just enough to do with duty free and something to eat to stop you being bored. Cost wise it's airport prices. The book shop has plenty of English titles which where roughly what they cost back home if you have to buy one. The "souvenir" type items where astronomical.
All in all its not too harrowing to fly in Thailand. The difficult bit comes at the taxi rank bit but you get that everywhere you travel.
We booked the transfer with the hotel from bangkok to first hotel which took some stress away plus it was in the cost of the room.
For the transfer from Phuket airport to Patong we winged it slightly and booked a mini bus which dropped is outside our hotel. This cost 300 bht for the pair of us but there is a bus that runs every half hour and it's about 100 bht each if you really wanted to save a bit if money.
