Anniversary Weekend and a Trip to the Bay of Islands was in store.
We had several plans, including a sky-dive, however this was not meant to be as both of us we're blocked up with head-colds. We didn't let this spoil our fun though.
As usual we headed off after work, getting stuck in Auckland's Bank-Holiday weekend traffic but managing to reach our campsite at Bream Bay on time. Unfortunately, due to time, poor light and us feeling generally miserable, we decided not to walk the 2 or 3 minutes to check out the beach that night. After reading about how amazing it was, we instead decided to stop off on the way home and glad that we did - better to enjoy the golden sands and sea when the sun is splitting stones!
Saturday we headed off for the intended Bay (of islands), then due to illness, spent a little unplanned time just trying to decide what to do with ourselves. We spent our first day mostly on dry land and as this is the area where NZ began the sites on offer included; the first stone house, the first wooden house, then lunch in the first hotel after a ferry trip across to Russell - New Zealand's first Capital city!! We even stumbled across a re-enactment of the English landing then spent the remainder of the afternoon exploring a few of the many isolated beaches.
We stayed at a campsite in the most fab setting, at the base of Haruru Falls, feeling really old when opting to shift site (to the boat ramp!) in order to avoid the partying youth (although we'd like to think it was just related to our colds).
Sunday we were feeling much better and decided to take to the sea. We hired a kayak and navigated our way past the ferries etc to explore some of the deserted islands, picnicking and taking in the views. In the afternoon we sailed around the bay in a small catamaran; It was the best way to see the bay, avoiding the hoards of tourists but to Ro's disappointment we didn't see any of the dolphins that inhabit the bay.
All in all 3 waterfalls this trip, as Tim opted for the coastal journey home, missing the opportunity of a 4th. However, we did stop off for a quick pee at the posh Hundertwasser loos!
