Tim and Debbie's Travels....
Spent two days in Datong visiting the famous Hanging Monastry and Yungang Caves of more than 50,000 Buddha statues after a four hour bus ride from Beijing. The monastry is more than 1400 years old and there used to be around 15 monks living there at any one time, so we were a tad concerned when we joined around 100 Chinese tourists all clambering over the place which is just held up by thin spindly sticks! Had a tasty dinner of kebabs, rice, noodles and some unidentified meat which may or may not have been either eel or snake. Decided against the distinctly rodent looking skulls with fangs even though the tomato sauce they were marinating in looked quite appealing. Accidentally wandered into a local brothel which was a little awkward but we just drank our beers reasonably fast while pretending to watch Celine Dion on the telly and scaring off Chinese punters.
Then caught the overnight train back to Beijing in a hard sleeper which is three bunks on top of each other, all very cosy! See you soon. x
