Tim and Debbie's Travels....
Had a wicked time in Beijing especially with the very glamorous Miss Collins! In between necking cheap Mojitos for 25 yuan(£1.50!) and stuffing our faces with Chinese food at least twice a day, the three of us managed to squeeze in most of the big sights! We spent an afternoon getting lost in the Forbidden City, which is China's largest load of ancient buildings and where the Ming and Qing dynasty emperors hung out with their thousands of concubines. Shamefully we also treated ourselves to a cheeky Starbucks coffee which has been somehow sneaked into the main palace square! Walked across Tiananmen Square where Sam was accosted continuously for photos by Chinese people fascinated by her blond hair.
Had a very hot day at the summer palace, we even hired a pedalo to relax on the lake, although had not bargained on the wind being quite so strong and our legs being so weak. And it really didn't help that the sun canopy kept catching the wind like a sail and whipping us back across the lake - it was the most exercise we've done since we've been away. Not so relaxing after all.
And of course we spent an afternoon at the Great Wall, which was obviously great. The views were a bit rubbish because it is really muggy and misty at this time of year, but it was still really amazing walking on top of it, never knew it was so high up. Quick stat....there is a watch tower every quarter of a km and there are 25,000 towers! Cheated a little on the way up by getting a cable car and really cheated by doing the last bit of climb by mini train...but the ulitmate in laziness was the zip line back down to the bottom!!! It was wicked, right over the lake, one Chinese lady even carried her tiny, but apparently very chilled, pug dog down with her.
On to Pingyao on the overnight tomorrow, Bye. x
