A week ago I was in Portugal, a place so unique and so unlike any other place I have ever been to. I started off my Portuguese trip in Hospital with a lovely looking doctor who told me my bandage he wrapped my swollen purple foot in was "sexy". Needless to say this was a humorous and unlikely start to my holiday that i'll ever forget. After hobbling to a nearby town's secret "running with the bulls", going to a strip karaoke bar, a street party with pints for a euro, a brothel turned bar, and dancing with large exotic flowers with new found friends, I can honestly say while my foot hadn't recovered, and my eyes certainly won't for awhile, I had experienced a new culture, and it was one that was completely and utterly foreign, and completely and utterly fantastic. My friends and I ended up at a hostel with a chef named Pedro, who was a scary but beautiful Portuguese man who fed us free dessert, and unlimited red wine, making him one of the many highlights of our adventures. Another highlight was going to Cascais beach, about a 40 minute train ride from Lisbon, and witnessing my first nudist beach goer, which consisted of a very tan old man in a bright red "mankini", accompanied by a completely naked tanned old woman with not one, but two nipple piercings spread eagled on the sand for the world to see. And lastly not to forget one of our interesting room mates who we nicknamed "Budah"; who was on a spiritual journey to find "enlightenment" and loved wandering around our lady filled room in his undies.
While many of these adventures weren't traditional "tourist-like" encounters where one scouts out every old monument and tourist filled museum , I feel like I immersed myself well into the Portuguese culture and found some hidden gems that made my holiday one of the best, and most interesting holidays yet.
