Sunday 9 March
Well, that's it for another Daytona Bike Week. Time for the out-of-towners to head back home, the stall-holders to sell their remaining stock at half price and everyone to nurse the last of their hang-overs.
Bike-week is about partying, lots of leather, lots of skin, tatoos, big women oh and the bikes...thousands of bikes with paint jobs, high handlebars, fringes and loud pipes and mainly, of course, of the Harley Davidson variety! Meanwhile, we cruise around on PC noise-friendly German iron.
Bars in Daytona and surrounding areas are simply geared up for bikers for the whole week. They have swap meet stalls, live bands and some even have coleslaw wrestling...not actually witnessed by us! Yeah right.
The week also culminates with the Daytona 200 at the Daytona International Speedway which we did witness and really enjoyed. Although the majority of the riders were American and unknown to us, there were some riders we did know - Scott Russell from the US and Neil Hodgson and Chaz Davies from the UK and Matt Mladin from Australia. An amazing crash happened in the early stages of the race where a rider came off his bike, his bike then righted itself, came past us at a great speed and then continued to follow the riders up the straight and into a rider at the next corner, t-boning him and bringing him off. We did have hopes for Neil Hodgson to win the race, starting from pole position but unfortunately his bike packed up with just 7 laps to go and the ultimate winner being American Josh Hayes.
During bike week, we have also been to Blue Springs State Park to see the Manatees taking shelter in the constant 72 degrees temperature of the waters. Neil has fitted a new temperature controller, outdoor fan motor and filter on Shelly's house A/C and helped to complete her new kitchen. All in a normal visit to Shelly's!
