Day 6: Zagreb to Sarajevo
What a long day!
Today was started with yet another early start. Once i'd had some breakfast, got dressed and packed my suitcase yet again, it was off to the train station to catch the 09:09 train to Sarajevo. I got to the station with just over half an hour til the train. As I was waiting around I overheard two Scottish guys talking about interrailing. I joined in with their conversation and found out that they were headed to Sarajevo today too. Which was lucky as neither of us really knew how to find the train (which turned out to be a bus for the first hour as there was construction work on the train line). Once we'd found the right bus we got on and found seats (unfortunatley the bus was pretty busy so we had to sit seperately). After just over an hour the bus stopped at Sisak Station and were transfered onto the train.
For the next 6 hours we chatted about our home lives as we travelled through croatia and into Bosnia. The train was very slow and stopped a lot (not just at stations but randomly too). It felt like the train could only go above 50 miles per hour for about 5 minutes and then had to slow down again. I was very greatful that i had the guys to talk to as I would have been bored senseless otherwise. It was especially comforting not to be on my own when we crossed the border into Bosnia and the police came on to check our passports, and ended up walking off with them. We were a bit concerned but after a couple of minutes they were returned to us with a new stamp in each showing that we had entered the country.
After 8 hours of travelling we finally reached Sarajevo. Now all we had to do was find our hostels. They were both in roughly the same area, so with the use of 3 different maps (my google map print out, a picture of the map at the station, and their map on their phone) we managed to find them. We parted ways and wished each other safe travels for the rest of our trips.
My hostel was located just off the main sqaure of the Ottoman part of the city. On first impressions the hostel was very run down, but the staff were really friendly and helpful, and it had everything that you would want whilst travelling. In the main common room I met a group of four guys (two Kiwis and two Aussies). I got talking to them for a while, listening to all their different travelling stories and having a couple of drinks. One of them, Anthony (one of the Kiwis) had been travelling for the past three years! Before I knew it it was past midnight. I said goodnight to the boys and headed to bed.
So there you have my long day of travelling to get to Sarajevo. Tomorrow its time to see the city. Night all.
