Day 8: Day trip to Mostar
Another pack day in the lovely Bosniaand Herzegovina!
Myself and my two new travel companions we're up at 8am this morning (with some coaxing of the boys), to get the 9am bus to Mostar, a Unesco world heritage site 2 hours south west of Sarajevo. Even though we left with plenty of time we still had to run to catch the bus. Luckily we made it on, and then got to relax for the next couple of hours. The time passed by quite quickly and we were soon in Mostar. By the time we got off the bus we were quite hungry so we went in search of some food before we explored the town. We ended up eating pizza in a little courtyard cafe (not very Bosnian, but it did the trick). After we were all full and refueled we started our sightseeing.
With Steve as our tour guide (even though he hadn't been there before) we took in the sights of the old town. It deffinitely has more of a rustic feel than the capital, with a lot less signs of war too. The main tourist attraction here is definitely the old bridge, which is where locals regularly dive off into the frezzing cold water below (a good 20 meter drop). We decided to sit and have a mini sunbathing session on the river bank and watch some of the locals dive off. They tend to wait till there's a big enough crowd, and even till the get enough money from tourists before they jump off. We only saw one person do it in the hour that we were there. After topping up our tan for a bit we headed up to the north part of the town to see the main church and parliament building (nothing very special but we got to see more of the town). We looped aroung and headed back to the old town again, this time with the intention of doing a bit of shopping. Steve bought himself a nice Fez hat (which he wore for the rest of the day) and with the help of Anthony i managed to haggle myself some very fetching harem trousers. Happy with our purchases we headed to a nearby park to relax before catching the train back to Sarajevo. The train ride home was a very scenic route (in quite a rustic old train) and was nicer than the bus, though it did take half an hour longer. We got back to the city at about 9pm and caught the tram back to the hostel.
So after another long day I have seen a different side to the beutiful and historic country of Bosnia and Herzegovina (one of my favourite places so far). Tomorrow its tome to move on again. See you in another country.
