Sorry it's been a while since I have updated. Our hotel in Athens made us pay for internet and it was expensive. Anyways, We arrived in Athina on Tuesday afternoon. We knew the hotel was waaay uphill so we opted to drive in to our hotel, drop off the luggage, return the car, and take public transportation back to the hotel. I would like to take this moment to inform everyone that I successfully navigated us to our hotel. we only made one wrong turn, which I then turned into a shortcut. Finally, after driving through the streets of athens (which are all in greek), and looking at and english map, Dad admitted my mapping skills.
So we got to the hotel and I notived one side looked out over Athens, and the other looked out at a road and a wall with a few trees. I specifically said, "aww man, we the crappy view". A few hours passed until I looked to my right and realized that we did not in fact have a crappy view, because we were staring right at the Parthenon. whoops.
We then climbed Filopoppou Hill which gave a panoramic view of Athens, the Acropolis, and teh Sarconic Gulf. We got lost in the part a little bit (dad was navigating), but eventually found our way out before dark. It seems as if the park and the acropolis staff collar all of the stray dogs, feed them, and take care of them. At one point I could see 10 dogs from just where I was standing. The cats are a whole different story.
The next day we went to the New Acropolis Museum, which just opened in June. The museum was built right on top of some ruins, so some of the floors were glass, and you could look right down at the ruins. It was the first museum I have been to where everyone was walking slowly while staring at the ground…and interesting concept.
On our way back a crazy homeless man threw coffee at me while I was reading the map, but it missed and landed at my feet. Then dad stared the guy down as he walked towards us. I was pretty sure we were going to get knifed. But we did not.
On another note, something I've found really interesting is that when two people trying to communicate don't speak the same language, they both, automatically begin to communicate in English.
Then finally, yesterday we took a boat to the Island Aegina, and spent the day on a quiet beach surrounded by mountains. By the way, how is school going Creightonians?
