Yesterday I saw the Nubia museum, Fatimid cemetery and the unfinished obelisk (42m long weighing over 1000 tonnes - the largest piece of stone ever handled however it cracked before they finished it). After some Egyptian pizza I was talking to a man with a stammer. He asked me to sit and talk with him and after a while he started asking me if I like bananas, I confirmed I like bananas. It took me about ten minutes and him mentioning the word "f***y" to realise what kind of bananas he was thinking of. Somehow I managed to meet two more people after the same thing, bananas seems to be a code word here. A strange man also followed me down the road for miles offering a horse carriage for 5 pounds because his horse hadn't eaten for 2 days. Tourism industry is suffering badly - a felucca captain waited outside a restaurant for an hour till I came out even though I said I wasn't interested.
I've also seen a few fights one including a knife (apparently most people even some kids carry knives because of the lack of police). Also you don't have to have a license or insurance to drive and I've seen people aged about 12 on motorbikes on their own and much younger smoking cannabis and cigarettes. There are lots of lovely people though.
Currently on an over air-conditioned train back to Luxor where I will stay a couple of days to see Allah etc. then I hope to see the White and black deserts.
