Arrived in Aswan yesterday afternoon in about 35 degree heat. Over the past few days in Luxor I have:-
Been to mummification museum showing the mummification process and some dead humans and animals. Luxor museum with amazing statues, artefacts and more dead people.
Visited banana island on a felucca and watched the sunset over the island. Travelled around non-tourist areas of Luxor by horse carriage whilst eating sugar cane. Also rode a camel.
Been on a whole day tour of the desert and sugar farmers' villages with allah's (33) brother Muhamed (20) and 2 friends all on one bike. Got invited into poor peoples houses who force fed me sugar cane on their rooftop and some other houses one of which offered me opium as well as a gift of tissues. In one of the houses the people couldn't stop staring at me and touching me - I don't think they had ever seen a White person before. Also lost fifty pounds by losing multiple times to hamdi (22, another brother) at FIFA.
I was going to leave on Tuesday evening for Aswan but Allah made me stay for another wedding in their street and I spent the night in their flat. For some reason I decided to go to the gym with hamdi which was slightly less boring than I'd imagined. I also looked around some of the brothers' flats which they build themselves. The parents own the ground floor and then the children build their own floors above, there are four floors at the moment but they have a licence to build six (2 flats of 3 rooms to each floor). Also looked around allah's house which he is building near Karnak. And wrote some postcards for him (he can't read or write in English).
Met a nice guy called Thomas in Aswan who showed me a nice cheap place for food.

sue hancock Wonderful to read your blog at last Tom! What an incredible time you are having. Fifty pounds sounded an awful lot to lose until I realised they must have been Egyptian pounds! Four on a motorbike - horror or horrors - just look after yourself pleeeeease.
