well, driving from Oamaru to Dunedin was like stepping back in time - open road, no traffic & golden oldies from the 60's playing on the radio (plus the odd blast from the new Tommy Emmanuel albums we've managed to acquire on the way) There seem to be very few big towns on South Island - mostly little rural townships which are still as as you would imagine they would have been when the first settlers arrived. We've now seen the Moeriki boulders and went to see the little yellow eyed penguins - but they were out! We've just got back from a 3 hour trip on the Taieri Gorge railway - quite amazing how they managed to build it by hand all those years ago. It's VERY high up & you go over lots of viaducts. the scenery is spectacular. Tomorrow we're off to Te Anau & going on the Doubtful Sound trip from Manapouri, which we've been told is a real treat. Now have to go & book somewhere to stay later this week otherwise we're in danger of sleeping in the car! We're having trouble getting into our e-mail so apologies to those we haven't answered.
