Well we arrived at Yulara on the 13th, another eventful Greyhound experience. We were about 15 minutes outside the resort and the bus started manking a lumping noise, so the driver gets out to take a look and we hear him on the radio saying there were only 2 left and he wasnt sure how far he could get? So we limped into Yulara and when we stopped we heard the driver on the radio again saying are you sure we should take some from the other side and when i looked he had the bolts in his hand. Looked like the wheel was held on by 2 bolts and they were going to take some off the others to fix it??? This country is crazy!!
Yulara in case you were wondering is the nearest you can stay to Ayres rock. Its a bit like disneyland but without the excitement and rides! There are about 5 different hotels/Hostels/Campgrounds on site and a free shuttle bus to run you about. There are also some shops and a supermarket .
We looked at the tours you could do to Ayres rock and decided on one that included the Olgas, it had a walk included with 2 options, an 8km walk or a 1 hour walk. Kate wanted to 8km telling me it was just like walking from Brantham to Manningtree and Back. Problem is they give you a 3 hour time limit as you have to meet the bus again. So we set off at about 2:30pm, and to begin with it was ok, then you come across nearly sheer walls of rock which your supposed to climb up! Well we all know my level of fitness and that combined with full sun, there was no shade at all, im flagging badly, kate is having to frog march me round the walk while im having a small heart attack.
We got to the top of a really steep bit and all the signs ran out. There was another family up there with 2 small children who were in a worse state than me! Luckily they had seen where others had gone but it was rediculas. It was not the kind of place you would want to get lost! Then you get bits with loads of loose rocks where you just stub your toes continously. Ive never sworn so much in 3 hours!
We made it back with about 2 minutes to spare, ive never wanted to sit and cry more in my life, i could hardly lift my legs from exhaustion. After that we were on the bus again to see Ayres rock at Sunsut but i have to say i really wasnt appreciating it. Id definately had enough of rocks by this point! If my day hadnt gone badly it was about to get worse, we get back to the dorm and as i walk into the room i stand on the biggest Millipeed you have ever seen and get all its guts up my leg! Nice!! Think i woke the whole dorm up with my screams!
The next day we spent by the pool relaxing, im a bit stiff but not too bad considering! We cant get a bus out of here til today, then its back to Alice Springs for the night and off to Coober Pedy!
