The Wandering Rupa
The night-kayaking was ace! There were some scary moments and I think I got stuck on every rock there was in the river - but it was great! I also won a pizza-eating competition before we set-off (15 slices!) but I don't think that was the best idea - I nearly sank!
We left Barrington tops this morning and took off to Crescent Head for Surf Camp. All the time I spent falling out of a boat into cold water seems to have done my foot some good. The swelling has gone down a lot and I can put some weight on it now so zip me into a wet-suit and push me out to sea!..............
Bloody nora surfing is actually quite hard! We've had two days of surfing lessons and 24 of us got back onto the bus feeling battered, bruised and exhausted! On the first day we had a BBQ and built a camp-fire on the beach, took down our boxes of Goon (the backpackers vino - dirt-cheap wine made with nuts and fish eggs - ugh!!!!) and chilled under the stars so we were all a bit worse for wear when we were dragged out of bed for our second lesson the next morning.
I knew I'd have trouble staying on the board but I never expected to have so many difficulties just getting the board out into the water! You stagger forward a few steps and then a wave knocks you flying backwards twice the distance you'd covered - by the time I got out there I was almost too knackered to get on the board!
Once you're out there it's easy to find a wave and time it right so your board catches it. I struggled, at first, to get on my feet - some of the waves were quite intimidating for someone that's scared of the water! Once I got going though it was okay. STAYING on the board after that was near impossible! I managed to stay up a few times but I'm exhausted now.
We barely had time to catch our breath before we jumped back on the bus and headed for Byron Bay - I'm looking forward to a few days off the bus doing nothing!
