The Wandering Rupa
Here we are in Byron Bay then. We arrived late in the afternoon and checked into the Holiday Village Hostel. It has a pool and is over-run with Irish people celebrating St Pats Day by throwing themselves off the roof into the water and other bits of nonsense. We went for a meal and lots of drinking with our driver, Craig, in the club over the road, Cheeky Monkeys. Lots of cheesy music, dancing on tables, falling off and a late night/early morning visit to the local bakery for drunk food and off to bed.
Everyone from our bus was far too ill to see the sights the next morning so the majority of us stayed by the pool. A group of Irish lads had hit on the idea that "it's still St Pats Day in Britain because of the time difference" so the day was sinfully wasted with drinking and card games - I won $40 and a meal out - marvelous! Cheeky Monkeys again after dinner for more dancing on tables in my flip-flops (or flop-flips if you have them on the wrong feet) and early morning visit to the bakery - the drudgery of routine has already set in!
There wasn't much energy in our merry band of heavy drinkers the following day so we lathered on my SPF40 emulsion and fell asleep on the beach. A moderate shopping spree for a mothers day present and a quiet night in playing drinking games and subjecting myself to eating a packet of Beef Super Noodles for tea because I blew my days budget on a lovely pair of shorts.
Our third morning in Byron was much more productive. A gang of us got up at silly o'clock to watch the sunrise from the most easterly point in the whole of Australia - not many people can say they've done that! More shopping - because I had to have a top to go with the shorts - and another table-dancing drama in Cheeky Monkeys. We bumped into two Swedish lads that had been staying in Barrington Tops when we were there so that gave us an excuse to celebrate - because we hadn't seen them for days!
The next day was a bit of a recovery session. Me and the girls got super-organised and booked all of our buses up to Cairns as some of the places on our root were hit badly by the Cyclone and some of the buses have been cancelled. We also got a great deal on a self-drive tour of Fraser Island and sailing in the Whitsundays. It includes two nights each in Hervey Bay, Airlie Beach and Cairns so Everything is done now and we can just sit back a relax - I'm sure you can tell that I've had a very stressful time of it lately.
The next morning saw us back on the bus (up to Brisbane now) hungover and vowing a detox program after out little drinking binge.
