Hi,
We spent 2 nights in Quito. We probably would have stayed longer, but were running out of time!
We stayed in the Old Town, as we understood this to be safer than the New Town. Whilst here, we did our own little walking tour of the city, in and around the Plaza Grande. We saw the presedential palace, the cathedral, we went to the monestary of Santa Catalina but it was closed :( the church of Santa Domingo, and hte Centro Cultural Metropolitano. We were quite excited about this last one, which was described in our guide book as a hub of activity. We queued in a very long queue without really knowing what we were queuing for, but as there didn't seem to be anything on the ground level, we assumed we must have to go up. When we finally arriived at the top and paid our admission, we discovered it was a tour of a museam about the independence of Ecuador. And it was in Spanish. Which we didn't understand. The displays were really naff and we didn't have a clue what was going on. The guide noticed us at the back and came to speak to us. I managed 'No entiendo, no espanol' so he took us back to the front desk. We thought that was that and we would be on our way, but instead he passed us onto another guide who spoke poor broekn English, so we had to endure the guided tour again!
This serves us right for not learning Spanish before we came here!
We continued our day to the Basilica del voto nacional, which when we reahced the top of the very steep stairs, gave amazing views over the town.
Now,, we head to Columbia!
All our love
Stevie & Sam
