The Simple Life
After all the travel nightmares we had it was a 5 minute easy check-in at Singapore and a pain free 6 hour flight. We arrived at 6:30am in Perth and a tired but smiley Skip was waiting to greet us. Had a tour of the city and surronding areas on the drive back to Emma's and liked what we saw. Caught up for an hour or so and after a much needed "proper" shower we headed out to Fremantle (or Freo as the locals call it) for breakfast / lunch on the cafe strip. We were nearly falling asleep in our plates so went back to Emma's for an afternoon nap.
Emma had arranged for us to go to the Ocean Beach Hotel (OBH) to watch the sunset on Cottlesloe Beach and sample some of the local wine. Feeling tired and emotional at finally arriving in Oz it wasn't long before we were tired and emotional through booze! We met Rodney (Emma's flatmate), Tomo (who's family are originally from Leslie, Fife) and some of Skippy's sailing buddies. Conquering the tiredness and forgetting it was a school night for all of them we dragged Emma and Tomo to one of the local bars / clubs. You could say we were the more mature drinkers in the crowd!!! Still, we showed them how to have a good time. Skip and Tomo retired early but we found ourselves being asked to leave at closing. Nothing changes.........
Hangover from hell the next morning meant we spent all of it in bed and didn't surface till mid afternoon. We took a walk down to the beach which was a shock to our system after only having to stagger 10 steps to find sand in Thailand! We stopped at a Backpackers Hostel to get some info on jobs and flats (yes, reality beckons) and used the internet. Practically had to crawl back home with the heat and tiredness but luckily Em was feeling tired too and we stayed in with a bottle of Champers and Spag Bol! After spending 8 hours in a queue for the Big Brother Auditions, Tomo appeared, looking like a lobster. He was unsuccessful. Thinking he must have sun stroke, due to his giggling and muttering we finally realised that he was stoned! (that's why he turned up with 2 pizzas and garlic bread!) We settled down to watch some TV but most of it was drowned out by Tomo's snoring and other manly, bodily noises if you get our drift!!!
Woke around 10 on the Saturday, Emma had gone sailing bout 7.30ish! Got invited to the beach with Rodney and a couple of his friends so we wandered down around lunchtime. Spent a few hours in the sun before heading to the supermarket to get some shopping. We now understand why no-one walks in Perth. If the heat doesn't kill you then the marathon hike will! The two of us were losing the will to live by the time we got back home! Went out for dinner with the guys from Emma's Sailing Club and their wives, all very civilised for us. It was an early night as we had been invited to go sailing to collect the boat from Hillary's Port further up the coast, the next morning.
We were rudely awakened at 6.30am and it was a shock to the system! Got driven up to Hillary's where we met the boat. This type of sailing was a new experience for us - 180 degree angles, cold, spray, sails, ropes etc. It was exhausting watching then all hahahah! We did get involved, just before we docked back at Fremantle, assisting with the sails. We were quietly chuffed when we were told that even with a normal crew of 10, they had never wrapped the sails so good before!!!
We then hopped on to Murph's power boat at the Harbour and went for a hair raising spin back out to sea. Stopped just by the shore for a swim. Holy s*** - the Indian Ocean is freezing, we thought we were back in the North Sea! Took the boat into Fisherman's Port where we felt the need to sample the Fish and Chips then sailed back around to Fremantle. Exhausted from all of our exertions it was another quiet evening in front of the TV. Monday was looming and there were jobs to be found EEK!!!!!
