Well, we have covered a lot of ground since our last entry in Great Falls, MT. Lack of internet access is hampering our updates, but I shall try and remember as much as possible. We left Great Falls Sunday morning and headed south to Wyoming and Yellowstone National Park. Our destination for the day was Old Faithful. We passed some pretty cool stuff along the way, notably two exceptionally large elk and Mammoth Hot Springs. We arrived at Old Faithful around 6pm and were lucky enough to only have to wait for 10 minutes to see it 'go up'. It was pretty impressive!!......though none of us were sure it was worth the long detour on crappy roads with very low speed limits. Hence we arrived at our motel very late and exhausted.
On the subject of motels, all are not equal in price range or branding. One Super8 cannot be judged by another. Some are really s***e!! (the Super8 in Dubois had some kind of scientific fungi experiment growing around the tub). I am planning on becoming an expert on how a motel room can look just from the outside of the building, this will hopefully save on a lot of un-necessary leg-work.
So we left Dubois on Monday morning and headed east toward Casper, Wyoming and then south to Cheyenne, Wyoming. The landscpe gradually became flat and boring, and the driving more tedious with it. The highlight of the day was probably our evening meal. We had a very scary Pizza Hut experience in Cheyenne. The food was greasy and the clientele even greasier. Darcy commented it was his scariest restaurant experience ever. Personally I thought it was few degrees less scary than Dennys in Kingman, AZ (but I'm not planning on taking him there so he's taking my word for it)....anyhow, we now have two places we won't be rushing back to. As for Cheyenne (pronounced Shy-anne, for some bizarre reason), it's pretty grim all round. Very industrial , few redeeming features, and if you want get any sleep, find another town.....as a train passes through on average every 15 mins, blasting it's horn. In a nutshell, Cheyenne is worth by-passing.
So from Cheyenne we headed south into Colorado and through Denver. From Denver we went east and into Kansas. Kansas is flat! Flat with very straight roads and absolutely nothing to see, no wildlife, no road-kill, NOTHING! So for tonight we are holed up in a very nice Super8 in Salina, KS. We have steered clear of the local Pizza Hut, and are looking forward to arriving in Texas tomorrow evening. A short days driving of 447 miles....LOL....We are prepared for the joys and excitement of the remaining Kansas and Oklahoma plains. Never have I longed so hard to see even a molehill!! At least now though, I know where corn comes from!
