Guten abend alles!! Dan and I have hit Deutshchland - our third country in 7 days (not counting those multiple crossings as we looped through Belgium and Holland in those first few days).
7 hours and 3 trains later (baaaaad connections) we have arrived in Cologne, and both of us are finding it totally weird to be back in a big city again. In just a week we have become so used to the peaceful countryside and little towns, we feel quite out of our depths in all this hustle and bustle! I had even taken off my watch as what's the point of time right now?? (what a lovely luxury - I can hear all you workers grinding your teeth from here!) Despite the sudden onslaught of people, we have just come back from visiting the famous cathedral and a lovely picnic dinner on the riverside park. Everyone else seemed to think it was a good idea too as the place was rammed with groups taking in the lovely warm Friday evening.
After a couple of days off it will be quite a relief to get back out on the open roads with just us and the bikes actually. We're aiming to get out of the city relatively early tomorrow morning, in part to miss the traffic and also the heat as it will be 30 degrees by 2pm, and as we found on Wednesday, heat, open waterways (i.e. wind) and long distances on a bike do not a Happy Sally make! :)
The aim is to make it somewhere south of Bonn for tomorrow night's stopover. One of the benefits of not planning much in advance is of all the stuff you uncover on the fly (this can obviously work for and against your overall enjoyment of a holiday!). In this case I think it's worked in our favour as I've just found out the stretch of the Rhine we're about to go down has been named by the relevant tourism authority as the 'romantische Rhine', presumably to try to compete with the more famous romantic road. So having done some quick Internet searches I'm quite excited about what's to come! (and thanks to Tim K in advance for the recommendation!)
Better sign off now and get the bags packed! It's amazing how time consuming unpacking and repacking two medium sized panniers can be! It's like the tardis in there...
Xoxo Sally

Charl Willis No watch? No watch?? Actually I don't care as I'm now officially on holiday too! Woohoo! Haben Sie eine tolle Zeit in Deutschland! :-)
Jean What's a watch?!!
cologne christmas markets I definitely think that Cologne is one of the German cities you can see in a relatively short space of time and one of the nicer big cities. I tend to go over at the end of the year to see the famous Cologne christmas markets and a weekend is usually enough. Having said that, I have a friend who can easily spend a month there so I guess it depends up onthe type of traveller you are. In any case, it is a lot more laid back and cool than Berlin in my opinion and I would choose Cologn before Berlin anytime.
