There's no place like Phi Phi to party!
New Year on Koh Phi Phi was everything I wanted and more... the island is absolutely beautiful, with warm sea to swim in, fluffy white sand to sunbathe on and big nightclubs on the beach to dance at!
Zoe, Cords and I stayed in a lovely bungalow, perched high on the hill overlooking the island - which is lush and tropical, with hundreds of palm trees, chattering geckos and cheeky monkeys. I totally fell in love with the island, so much so that our 4 day trip there became 9 days - I would have stayed longer if my visa wasn't about to run out.
New Year's Eve was kicked off in style, with buckets, glittery masks and body paint at the rooftop Banana Bar, where the staff showed us how it was done by modelling crazy designs in UV paint. It seemed as though the whole island was headed for the beach for the big countdown, so we joined the procession and headed to the clubs there. The tides on Phi Phi mean that the beach is huge at night, with just inches of seawater. Too inviting to pass up, we toddled into the sea to watch fireworks light up the sky. It was just gorgeous - they were so bright that the entire beach was illuminated, and paper lanterns drifted along in the distance. As we counted down to midnight, Zoe, Cords and I hugged and whooped with delight as we watched the firework display wave goodbye to 2010. What a night. We danced until it got light, then toasted the sunrise from the edge of the sea.
We climbed right up to the viewpoint to see sunset one night, which was about the most strenuous thing I did the whole time we were on the island - mostly we just did a lot of sunbathing and swimming (or wallowing like happy hippos!).
Photos from the Phi Phi Party album aren't pretty, but should give an idea of the amount of fun we had drinking luminous cocktails from buckets, jumping about like mad things on the dancefloor (a crazy and gigantic Danishman threw me around in rockabilly-style swing dance moves one night), and watching the sunrise on the beach after a hard night's partying.
