After a lie in on Saturday morning, we did have several beers Friday night, and a bacon sandwich provided by our host, we left Narangba and headed towards Redcliffe, a small town to the north east of Brisbane. We found small suburbs called Scarborough, Margate and Brighton. Unfortunately the weather was a little overcast and more akin to being at the seaside on the east coast of Yorkshire and not the east coast of Queensland.
We made our way into the city and found the only campsite close to the centre in the suburb of Newmarket. Brisbane is a big city in Australia but has quite a homely feel to it and certainly not as hectic or busy as Sydney, but as my sister said 'no where is as hectic as Sydney!'
Chris and Lorna had recommended eat street market to us as a decent place to visit, about an hours journey on public transport at Port Side Wharf, we thought we'd pay it a visit on Saturday night. Oh no not another market, but this one was different, a few stalls selling clothes, art work and jewellery and many more selling food from all over the world. South American, European, Indian, Malaysian, Oriental in fact pretty much anywhere you can think of. We sampled a few alcoholic beverages to get into the spirit and sat and watched a couple of bands there to entertain the crowds.
Sunday we travelled back into the city and being the tourists that we are went on the big red bus tour around the city. We hopped on and off at a couple of stops and spent most of our time on the south bank of the Brisbane river. Another market, more food courts and a couple drinks listening to the band playing the 'Sunday session on the green' and the sun was shining, what Sundays are made for - fantastic. Back on the bus we visited China town on the way back into the city centre.
The transport links make travelling around the city very easy, there didn't seem to be a great deal of traffic and we didn't have to wait long for buses, even a closure on the Story bridge, linking the north of the city to the south, didn't cause much delay. All in all it made a big city seem quite small and a pleasure to explore.
