Gold Coast……
Back on the treadmill: our testimonial body pump class at Fitness Attitude. Amusing: Annelise set up her station at the back, but Michael made sure he pointed her out and made us the subject of several gags.
Booked a couple of flights in Thailand and then set out on our tour of the Gold Coast. First stop was lunch at Burleigh Heads. Selected a cafe looking on to the beach located at the front of the old theatre, which having been constructed in 1913 made it one of Australia's oldest buildings. Nice salad. Feeling self righteous we went to the "Cold Rock" shop next door. Here one could choose flavours of ice cream and additives such as crunchie bars, wine gums or even fresh fruit and the server smashes them all together and serves it up. The cheesecake/strawberry ice-cream combo mixed with raspberries and crunchie was yum.
Ate our ice creams on the beach and took a "fodo". Asked Annelise to pose in front of the lifeguards truck, but having seen the 2 hunks inside she practically climbed in…..
Back on the road, we drove north along the Gold Coast highway passing between the high rises of Broad Beach and Surfers Paradise and the waterways in-land. (Annelise missed all this because she was asleep). Came to a stop at the end of "The Spit". Kylie told us that in her youth, this was where Brisbane18 year olds would come and rev their cars, compare engines and try to impress girlfriends with their driving antics. So she'd heard……..We walked to the lighthouse at the end of the spit and had a great view south down the Gold Coast. To the right was a popular surfing beach and being on a breakwater we were level with where they caught the waves. Strong onshore breeze and short unworkable rides, so I gave it a miss.
Next stop was Surfers…….walked around the centre and Cavill Avenue (Cav Av). According to Kylie, this was the block where the teenagers cruised round and round, revving, trying to impress their impressionable young girlfriends in the passenger seat. So she'd heard……Stopped for a coffee and admired the Meter Maids……:Parked up by the beach and strolled through the artisan's evening market (i.e.tat). on to the sand and into the sea or a paddle, so Annelise could say she had been in the sea at each side of the Pacific Ocean.
Once Michael had peeled the parking ticket of the windscreen (ticket machine was 2 spaces to the right, understandably we'd missed it) he drove us to a secluded spot in Broadbeach where we could change clothes in the car before dinner. The seclusion being limited to a low hedge blocking the view from the drive through bottle shop, on a reasonable busy street with a bum sitting on the wall next to the car. I was busy outside offering to rig up some towels on the window, not realizing that every time I opened the door the internal lights came on. Retired into the car to change my trousers just as someone came and stood right nest to the window…..Even the night floodlights came on and then we noticed the street cctv camera……
Finally we emerged and headed or the nearest pub. I ordered "two pots of New please mate" just as Michael had coached me. Barman asked if I meant "pint". Picked up 2 bottles of Andrew Garrett sparkling red from the bottle-o and went back to Coolangatta or dinner.
Ate at a Greek venue - great tucker washed down with a Margaret River Cab Merlot. Back home we watched Michael and Kylie's wedding video and turned in at 1230. Good luck to which ever of them was teaching the early step-class.
